back home from a lovely visit to las vegas. I enjoyed myself a lot. I went a saw some bad ass comedy shows at the tnt comedy festival. I couldn't get tickets to the roast of cheech and chong but I did see ralphie may, tomy boy, and kids in the hall. they were hilarious. I got very drunk my last night in vegas... I went to a heavy metal concert last week. it was called the mayhem tour with disturbed and slipknot my sister took me. it was wild. it was ofcourse nothing in comparison to a sepultura, pantera or primus concert in terms of mosh madness (wich is how I rate a hard rock concert... by the pits). it seems real hard rockin mosh pits are just not as popular anymore or something.. suprizingly it was one of the side stage bands interestinly name 5fingerdeathpunch that was my favorite band of the day.. they actualy had a good moshpit and they worked to get it and mold it. I love that. I expected something harder from the two headline bands . slipknot rocked with all the sophistication of a symphony mixed with a heavy dose of 80s glamrock and horror fantasy. disturbed seemed to be lacking in energy and on stage excitement. there were very few good mosh pits for a hardcore rockshow that means it was pussy rock or the crowd was full of pansies. but I think in the end it was the poor planning and running of the show coupled with a bad choice in concert venues and a pour utiliazation of that venue.


ok let me begin by talking about 5 finger death punch... they were hardcore and the perfect live concert band. they knew how to play with the crowd they brought the live intensity and they rocked the house. the crowd truly went insane for them. there was a huge moshpit at the foot of the band and you could see the enjoyment the band was having as they molded and controled the intensity of the pit with their hard hitting heavy music. the lead singer was very loud charismatic and a real entertainer. they got all of this excitement out of a croud in broad daylight at like 4 in the afternoon..

disturbed played all their top hit songs wich most of the crowd knew the words to and sang with. no one moshed people just crouded to fame gaze upon their favorite band... but I dont think they realy played their hardest stuff they played a lot of the new stuff.as for techie stuff all they had was a banner and a spot light...

slipknot showed how tallented they were musically and they did bring the excitement and the vaudvillian showmanship. they had the crowd singing to almost every song with them.. still no good moshpits though boo.. I looked and looked.. I kept hunting and hunting but the only pits I saw were earlier in the day. as for techie stuff... they were interesting.. they had their costumes and masks ofcourse and lots of spot lights to follow each of the members as they come in and out. they had a bunch of platforms and some that lifted and lowerd that they had band members on. one of the platforms would put the drumer on his side and spin him around. they very much put on a show they were very entertaining and tried working up the croud... I did not like hearing a story between each song though.. it was boring.



the concert venue was cricket pavilion on the west side of phoenix. this is generaly a bad venue for rock bands. (compton terrace is the very best.. good luck getting it) cricket has a large seated area in front of the stage separated by a small slab of flat concreet for the special vip ticket holders (pit passes). then there is a very large fast sloping hill thing that people can sit on that is the lawn area or nose bleed cheep seats. no flat areas for dancing or moshing. so the main stage can be a tough place for a band to get the crowd realy moving. having said this now I will review the concert.

it was very poorly run.. cricket has 3 or 4 very large areas that are perfect for setting up side stages.. they put two sidestages in one section and filled the rest with sales stores . the two sidestages shared one space having only a long fence to seperate the two wich made going from one stage to the other more difficult for the crowd wich made for alot of line waiting to go from one side to the other... poor people flow design. so during the day they only had the two side stages open and didn't use the main stage with the largest area at all.. then at night they stoped the two side stages and had 3 bands on the main stage with an hour or an hour an half wait between each band... that was a recipe for disaster... they should have had a side stage or something entertaining that drunk roudy crowd...

I am all about mayhem and wild concerts and hard core mosh pits and toking it up and drinking it up and generally getting roudy... but lighting large piles of plastic and styrophome and inhaling deaply is not my idea of a good time.. that smoke is nasty... a good fire made of wood or ever real paper or grass or something natural and good smelling would be awesome... but a fire of plastic and styrophoam is rediculously pathetic. I stomped out a few fires just to watch the firestarted come unglued.. it was funny as hell. but I think there were around 20 large fires at that concert and they just kept getting bigger as people finnished their beers and added their cups to the growing fires. I remember seeing fires at concerts before but I dont remember people doing plastic fires... people would just light tshirts and paper and only resort to plastic as a last resort.. i dont know what the difference was maybe the venders are using more plastic now a days.. to sell their 6 dollar bottles of water..bottom line I did not enjoy the plastic fires at all... this venue makes no effort to use vendors with non toxic and non flamable cups or plates when they know they will have huge fires. the smoke coming from the concert was thick many people were wearing bandanas over their faces so they could breath better. yuck yuck yuck. when did going to a concert mean trying to show disrespect to as many people as possible. I actualy saw people flicking their cigarette buts up in the air to land on a random person in the crowd... you had to keep an eye out for all the cups that were being thrown up into the air to hit a random person. maybe I am getting old but can you just mosh damnit... I went to the concert to watch some bad ass mosh pit action... not to hang out with a bunch of pussies that just want to stare at a fire of plastic cups.. serioulsy...
